EMS, the leading pharmaceutical company in Brazil, has announced the acquisition of Fresenius Kabi’s injectable drug operations in the country. The transaction includes a manufacturing plant in Anápolis (Goiás) and a distribution center in Goiânia, marking a strategic move to reinforce EMS’s presence in the hospital segment.
Although the value of the transaction was not disclosed, EMS expects an increase of approximately BRL 150 million in annual revenue, which currently stands at BRL 8.3 billion. This acquisition also marks the company’s return to the injectable drug market—a segment it exited nearly a decade ago but now reenters as part of its expansion strategy.
The acquired product portfolio includes critical hospital-use medicines such as antibiotics and corticosteroids. EMS plans to double the revenue from this new business unit within 12 months and to expand its presence across both the public and private healthcare sectors.
Additionally, EMS is currently building a new injectable drug facility in Hortolândia (São Paulo), aiming to boost production capacity and provide comprehensive pharmaceutical solutions to hospitals and clinics throughout Brazil.
The deal is still subject to approval by Brazil’s antitrust authority (CADE). Until then, Fresenius Kabi’s facilities will continue operating independently to ensure uninterrupted supply and operations.
Fresenius Kabi stated that the divestment aligns with its global strategy to streamline production and focus on its core segments: Biopharma, Clinical Nutrition, Pharma, and MedTech.
